An Honor for “Coop”

John Cooper receives Wildlife Management Institute’s 2010 George Bird Grinnell Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Natural Resource Conservation

Former South Dakota Chapter member of The Wildlife Society and highly regarded wildlife professional John Cooper (at left) has been honored with the Wildlife Management Institute’s 2010 George Bird Grinnell Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Natural Resource Conservation.

On Wednesday, March 24, during the 75th North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, WMI’s President Steve Williams (above, at right) presented the award to Cooper—fondly known as “Coop.”

Cooper has achieved many noteworthy accomplishments during his career in wildlife conservation. In 1982 he received the Wildlife Professional of the Year Award from the South Dakota Chapter of The Wildlife Society. He successfully pushed for passage of the landmark Water Resources Development Act, which was signed into law by President Clinton on Dec. 11, 2000. A leader in wildlife management and conservation, Cooper also served as Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks, and as President of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

Tony Leif, South Dakota’s Wildlife Division Director and a life member of TWS’ South Dakota Chapter, acknowledges Cooper’s dedication to the wildlife profession. “Coop's love for the outdoors has taken him a long way from his 22 years as an agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and far beyond the many hours he spends pursuing his love for hunting and fishing,” says Leif. “I now have the privilege of working side-by-side with Coop as he serves on our agency citizen board at the Game, Fish and Parks Commission. His passion and his energy are a tremendous asset to South Dakota and to our nation's natural resource management efforts.”

The Wildlife Society extends its congratulations of John Cooper, and its appreciation for his dedication to wildlife management and conservation.
