We invite you to Florida, arguably one of the most ecologically exciting places in North America with over 80 distinct ecosystems.
This land of beaches and barrier islands is dotted with a diversity of upland habitats such as longleaf pine/wiregrass and endemic oak scrub, tropical hardwood hammocks and prairies, palmetto flats and south Florida rocklands, many of which have been influenced and carved by a combination of more springs, rivers, marshes, swamps, and lakes than any other state.
It is all here, enmeshed in a web of ecotypes: a landscape that has evolved and adapted unique ecological characteristics with the slightest changes in elevation and latitude. We invite you to enter our world and venture into a tropical paradise, without a passport.
We dare you not to feel insignificant and minute in the middle of the vast Everglades, or not to be dazzled by the colors and complex interactions on our coral reefs. You will be impressed by the diversity and magnitude of fish and wildlife and are guaranteed to add new vertebrates to your life list; perhaps our native American crocodiles, greater flamingos, limpkins, Florida Key deer, and the Everglades snail kite.
We encourage you to take time outside of the conference to enjoy amazing fishing opportunities in the fishing capital of the world, gorgeous paddling expeditions, spectacular snorkel and scuba diving excursions in the Florida Keys, and tropical white sand beaches with aqua blue water.
Delve into the cultures and history of the Miami area, from the extinct Tequesta people, to Spanish settlements, and the age of pirates, to more recent Miccosukee and Seminole tribes, and 19th century Americana. Miami is a true melting pot of cultures, cuisine, music, and art, which is reflected in the shopping districts and museums of the area. Of course, the Miami nightlife is ablaze with vibrant music and a unique dance scene.
The members of the Florida Chapter are excited to show you and your family the intricate and breathtaking ecosystems of South Florida, the plights and salvations, and the effort to achieve sustainability in a state that is founded on the principles of development. The lessons you will learn will undoubtedly assist you, as what Florida faces now will likely be experienced by others throughout the country in the future. Please join us in Miami, November 8-12, 2008, for the learning experience of a lifetime!
See you in Miami!
