We are happy to announce that the SCTWS continues to grow and executive members have been busy recruiting members through government, industry, universities, and colleges. Currently, there are 48 members from 8 communities throughout the province. The executive of the SCTWS has been meeting regularly and has decided to circulate a quarterly newsletter to the membership, with the first newsletter to be distributed in late March. Additionally, we will be having our 1st Annual Mixer before everyone heads off to the field in early April. Because the executive of the SCTWS was not established until late 2011, the executive decided to extend membership dues paid in 2011 to the 2012 calendar year, which has hopefully resulted in a couple of happy members. A few members had already renewed their SCTWS memberships through TWS online and many have graciously donated these funds to the Chapter. We’d like to thank these members for their contributions. Be sure to look for the first issue of the SCTWS newsletter in late March. If you reside in Saskatchewan, consider purchasing a SCTWS membership for only $5 (good through Dec. 31, 2012)! Any questions, concerns, or comments can be directed to the executive of SC TWS via email at

I want to thank you all for your words of support - they are greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing many of you in person at the Texas Chapter meeting later this month. Best regards, Janet Janet Wallace WSB Editorial Assistant TWS Position statements
As you may already know, The Wildlife Society regularly prepares position statements that address national and international issues affecting the current and future status of wildlife. These position statements are not intended for exclusive application to the United States but are meant to define issues and describe the most probable biological, social, and economic results of alternative actions throughout North America and the world. Prior to their adoption by TWS Council, these position statements are open for review and comment by the membership. Consequently, there is opportunity for Canadian members of TWS to comment on these position statements and, most importantly, to provide a Canadian perspective on critical issues affecting wildlife on our continent and beyond. Animals do not carry passports, nor do they recognize political boundaries, why should we? Click on this link to go to the position statements webpage. Information For Students! Webinar Courses for Natural Resource Managers CSTWS Electronic Education Series The first CSTWS Electronic Education Series presentation was given by Dr. Lee Foote, University of Alberta, on Tuesday April 5th, 2011. Dr. Foote’s talk was titled “Sustainable Use of North American Wildlife: What can Africa Teach Us? A summary of his presentation was given in the March 2011 newsletter (Vol. 4, No. 2). Given the feedback received, the Education Committee hopes to bring the series back in 2012. The Committee would like to see the series become more than just another online “webinar” and has proposed that sessions could also include workshops or even panel discussions such as a workshop on using the R statistical package, constructing Resource Selection Functions, wildlife diseases or a waterfowl ID session. If you have any suggestions for speakers or topics you would like included in the series please contact Art Rodgers (Past-President CSTWS) Teaching Adaptive Management (TAM) Network Launched
A growing number of graduate programs are offering courses in the Open Standards approach to adaptive management. Foundations of Success (FoS) is currently building a Teaching Adaptive Management (TAM) Network that hopes to capitalize on this opportunity and lead the academic community towards making adaptive management training an essential part of graduate programs. Through this online network, conservation graduate programs with new or existing courses have access to tried and tested teaching materials and benefit from the experience and lessons learned from colleagues who have taught a similar course. See the TAM Network website for more information. USGS is offering several online courses. For more details go here. Also check out the diverse working groups in TWS (http://joomla.wildlife.org, then click on working groups), among them the College and University Wildlife Education Working Group: http://www.rw.ttu.edu/colluniv/ back to top

Baltimore, one of the oldest cities in the United States, is just 45 minutes from Washington, DC, two hours from Philadelphia, and three hours from New York City. It also sits on the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States, and home to numerous conservation-related efforts in restoration, fisheries management, and the effects of urbanization and agriculture on watersheds and aquatic life. In addition to being served by nearby Baltimore-Washington International Airport, the city is within driving distance of two more airports that serve the greater Washington, DC area.
ICCB is the Society's premier event bringing together conservation scientists, students, and practitioners from around the world to present and discuss the latest conservation science, practice and policy. While the hallmark of each ICCB is its top notch lineup of symposia, workshops and short courses; what makes the Congress special is its emphasis on people and relationships, local culture, collegiality, and professional networking. President's Message Kathreen Ruckstuhl, Associate Professor, University of Calgary, Biological Sciences, Calgary, Alberta Calgary, Febraury 28, 2012: CSTWS is now in its 5th year, believe it or not!!! Over the past year, CSTWS has been extremely active in forming various committees (conservation affairs, education, awards, membership and audit) and has drafted several white papers on topics of concern, such as for example the “white-nose syndrome” in bats, and we also started a new electronic education series with invited speakers who give seminars to interested parties via teleconference. Together with TWS we further drafted a letter to Prime Minister Steven Harper to offer our expert advice on wildlife related matters. To sum up, our Section and chapters are growing fast and we are being increasingly heard and listened to. That is a good thing! As you’ve probably all heard by now Manitoba was successful in getting the 2015 TWS conference to Winnipeg! We are extremely exited to bring the TWS back to Canada after having hosted it only once before, in Calgary, in 2004. The Manitoba chapter and CSTWS are starting to get organized and will welcome anybody who would like to be part of the organizing them or participate in one way or another. So please get involved! For details on CSTWS activities and more please read the current bimonthly newsletter. Well, that’s all for now. Enjoy the newsletter!
Best, Kathreen
